CORDES VOCALES: expanding the classical guitar through the voice
When thinking about the combination of voice and guitar, two distinct dimensions immediately come to mind: the duo made up of a guitarist and a singer as separate entities, or the singer-songwriter who accompanies themselves on the instrument. Consequently, the type of repertoire one might expect also changes: while the first formation is quite common in the classical chamber music context, the second is associated, in the collective imagination, primarily with modern pop, rock, and folk music. But is it possible for a third, hybrid role to exist between these two worlds?
This project arises from the desire to explore, as a solo musician, the different ways in which guitar and voice can interact, from traditional accompanied melody to the use of singing, vocal gestures and sounds as a timbral and expressive extension of the instrument, focusing both on existing works conceived for a single performer and on new pieces commissioned to contemporary composers, in order to establish a repertoire where voice and guitar are parts of one integrated instrument.
The aim is to discover how these two dimensions can merge beyond the boundaries of chamber music and predefined musical genres, offering new challenges and skills to the classical guitarist. Through this exploration, the project seeks to revisit the figure of the guitarist-singer within the world of classical music and to broaden the solo repertoire by integrating an expressive tool that every musician already possesses: the voice.
