Marco Ramelli è una figura eclettica nel mondo musicale, si distingue come interprete, insegnante, accademico e compositore, attualmente professore presso il TU Dublin Conservatoire. 

Dopo aver vinto importanti concorsi internazionali (Italia, Spagna, Regno Unito, Serbia e Francia) ha avviato un’attività concertistica che lo ha portato ad esibirsi in importanti sale e festival in tutto il mondo. Ha registrato per importanti etichette come Nimbus Alliance, Brilliant Classics, Naxos, Dynamic Records e per diverse radio. Come compositore ha vinto il prestigioso World Guitar Composition Competition e la sua musica è eseguita da alcuni dei solisti più acclamati a livello internazionale.

Marco è fortemente impegnato nel promuovere la musica soprattutto tra i giovani: è Direttore Artistico di alcuni festival musicali in Italia, Repubblica Ceca e Irlanda, come il Festival Corde d’Autunno Centro Asteria a Milano, il Touch The Sound Project a Carpi (Mo). Nel 2018 è stato insignito della “Chitarra d’Oro 2018” per la promozione da parte del Comitato Scientifico dell’International Guitar Conference “Michele Pittaluga”. 

Tiene masterclass e conferenze presso importanti istituzioni musicali in Italia, Irlanda, Spagna, Regno Unito, Grecia, Cina e USA.

Ha iniziato lo studio della chitarra con Andrea Dieci, diplomandosi presso il Conservatorio di Musica Giuseppe Verdi di Milano; in seguito ha conseguito il diploma post laurea di secondo livello (con il massimo dei voti e magna cum laude) presso il Conservatorio di Musica Luca Marenzio di Darfo. Si è laureato al Royal Conservatoire of Scotland con un Master Degree of Performance (APEL) con lode con Alan Neave in chitarra e Rory Boyle in composizione e ha conseguito un Dottorato come esecutore e compositore presso la St Andrews University (Regno Unito).  Ha conseguito inoltre un diploma post-laurea in “Musica da Camera” a pieni voti e una laurea in Informatica presso l’Università  Bicocca.

Andrea Dieci ha studiato nella classe di Paolo Cherici al Conservatorio “G. Verdi” di Milano, dove si è diplomato nel 1989 con il massimo dei voti, la lode e la menzione speciale. Ha inoltre studiato con Oscar Ghiglia, dapprima ai Corsi dell’Accademia Musicale Chigiana di Siena (sempre con Diploma di Merito), successivamente alla Musikakademie di Basilea, conseguendovi il Solistendiplom nel 1992. Ha partecipato a masterclass tenute da Julian Bream.

Ha vinto il 1° Premio ai Concorsi Internazionali di Gargnano, Lagonegro (dedicato alla musica per chitarra del XX secolo) e “De Bonis” di Cosenza, nonché il Premio Speciale della Giuria all’ARD-Musikwettbewerb 1989 di Monaco di Baviera. Ha tenuto concerti per prestigiose istituzioni musicali in Europa, negli Stati Uniti, in America Centrale e del Sud, Asia e Africa, figurando nell’ambito di manifestazioni di rilevanza mondiale quali il Festival dei Due Mondi di Spoleto, il Festival Internazionale della Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) e il Festival Internazionale di Singapore, ed esibendosi in festival musicali a Londra, Madrid, Los Angeles, Tokio, Atene, Istanbul e altre importanti città. È stato invitato a eseguire la Royal Winter Music di Henze alla Sala Grande del Conservatorio Reale di Bruxelles nell’ambito delle celebrazioni per gli ottantacinque anni di Julian Bream. Ha partecipato a programmi radiofonici e televisivi trasmessi da varie emittenti tra cui RAI, Radio Nacional Española, BBC e Radio Televisione Svizzera Italiana.

Ha inciso quattordici CD pubblicati dalle etichette MAP, DotGuitar e Brilliant Classics, tra cui figurano monografie su Manuel Maria Ponce, Nicola Jappelli e Fernando Sor. In duo col violinista Piercarlo Sacco ha realizzato due CD dedicati ad Astor Piazzolla e un recente CD con musiche di Mauro Giuliani, pubblicati da Brilliant Classics. Di particolare rilevanza, l’incisione delle opere complete per chitarra sola di Toru Takemitsu (MAP, 2004 – “Chitarra d’Oro” 2005 per il miglior disco dell’anno al Convegno Internazionale di Chitarra di Alessandria), Heitor Villa-Lobos (MAP, 2009) e Hans Werner Henze (Brilliant Classics, 2016 – “Chitarra d’Oro” 2017 per il miglior disco dell’anno al Convegno Internazionale di Chitarra di Alessandria). È l’unico chitarrista ad aver inciso le integrali di questi tre importanti autori. Una sua nuova incisione delle opere complete di Takemitsu è stata recentemente pubblicata da Brilliant Classics. Il suo ultimo album, dedicato alle opere per chitarra di Cyril Scott, Lennox Berkeley, Benjamin Britten e William Walton. è stato pubblicato da Brilliant Classics nel 2021.

Apprezzato didatta, ha tenuto masterclass e seminari per rinomate istituzioni musicali in vari paesi d’Europa, negli USA, in Messico, Brasile, Singapore e Giappone, tra cui: Royal Academy of Music di Londra, Conservatorio Reale di Bruxelles, Nihon Guitar Conservatory (Giappone), Università di Santa Maria (Brasile) e varie Università americane. È titolare della cattedra di chitarra all’Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali “Vecchi-Tonelli” di Modena.

Nei primi tre decenni del Seiecento il liuto era uno strumento ancora molto amato e diffuso nelle principali corti europee. Che Weiss fosse lo strumentista più generosamente pagato della Hofapelle di Dresda, centro ambito da quasi tutti musicisti dell’epoca, ci fa capire di quanta stima godesse tra i suoi contemporanei. Della raffinatezza e padronanza strumentale che lo resero famoso troviamo testimonianza nella sua vastissima opera, in cui le inesauribili e multiformi risorse del liuto sono incessantemente esaltate dalla maestria strumentale del compositore.

 

Evangelina Mascardi è considerata una tra i migliori liutisti attivi nel panorama concertistico internazionale. Nata a Buenos Aires nel 1977 si è diplomata in chitarra classica e ha cominciato giovanissima la sua attività concertistica. Nel 1997 si è trasferita in Europa per studiare liuto presso la Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Svizzera) dove ha ottenuto nel 2001 il “Solisten Diplom” sotto la guida di Hopkinson Smith.

Per oltre un decennio ha suonato come continuista diretta, tra gli altri, da Jordi Savall (Hespèrion XXI), Marc Minkowsky (Les Musiciens du Louvre), Andrea Marcon (Venice Baroque Orchestra), Giovanni Antonini (Giardino Armonico), Chiara Banchini (415) e Simon RaUle (Berliner Philarmoniker), con i quali ha registrato oltre 30 CD. Attualmente ha circoscritto la sua collaborazione all’Ensemble Zefiro (Alfredo Bernardini) e Monteverdi Choir (Sir John Elliot Gardiner) per concentrarsi principalmente sul repertorio solistico. Sempre accolta da critiche positive, si è esibita da solista in importanti festival europei di musica antica (Fringe – Barcellona, Concentus – Brno, Resonanzen – Vienna, Luth et Theorbe – Genêve, Early Music Festival – London, Festival di Musica Antigua – Daroca, Forum Musicum – Breslau), e chitarristici (Madrid, Treviso, Santander, Castell’Arquato, Pordenone, Lucca, Novara). Ha dedicato quattro incisioni solistiche a musiche di Johann Sebastian Bach, Sylvius Leopold Weiss, Bellerofonte Castaldi e Laurent de Saint-Luc per la ORF-Alte Musik (2005-2011), Arcana (2011) e Musique en Wallonie (2018). Evangelina Mascardi insegna Liuto presso l’ISSM ”Conservatorio A. Vivaldi” di Alessandria. Dal 2020 è membro del Comitato scientifico del “Convegno internazionale di chitarra” (Milano) e dal 2021 del Consiglio direttivo della Società italiana del liuto.

Con il nome di “SoloDuo”, Matteo Mela e Lorenzo Micheli formano uno dei duo di chitarre più attivi e conosciuti nel mondo: insieme hanno suonato in tutta Europa, negli Stati Uniti e in Canada, in Asia e in America latina, dalla Carnegie Hall di New York alla Konzerthaus di Vienna, dalla Sejong Hall di Seoul alla Sala delle Colonne di Kiev, dall’Auditorium di Milano al Concertgebouw di Amsterdam. Il “Washington Post” li ha descritti come “extraordinarily sensitive, with effortless command and an almost unbearable delicacy of touch”. La loro discografia comprende i Duos Concertants di Antoine de Lhoyer, le tre antologie “Solaria”, “Noesis” e “Metamorphoses”, un disco sulla musica del ’600 italiano per tiorba e chitarra barocca (“La suave melodia”, con Massimo Lonardi), una raccolta di opere da camera di Mauro Giuliani, le Sonate di Ferdinand Rebay, i 24 preludi e fughe di Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, i Quartetti op. 19 di François de Fossa (con Enrico Bronzi e Ivan Rabaglia), un lavoro sulla musica vocale di Alessandro Scarlatti e uno sui musicisti-scienziati tra Rinascimento e Barocco (con Massimo Lonardi e Renata Fusco), oltre a una decina di lavori solistici, cameristici e con orchestra. Il loro ultimo lavoro discografico, interamente dedicato a Beethoven, è uscito per Decca. Matteo è docente al Conservatoire Populaire de Musique di Ginevra, Lorenzo è professore di chitarra, vicedirettore e responsabile dell’area Performance al Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana di Lugano. Matteo e Lorenzo sono inoltre “Artists in Residence” alla University of Colorado Boulder (dal 2015) e alla Columbus State University (dal 2017), e dirigono una collana di musiche per chitarra presso l’editore canadese d’Oz. Andrea De Vitis (1985) è considerato a livello mondiale uno dei più interessanti chitarristi della sua generazione.

Ha studiato con Leonardo De Angelis, Paolo Pegoraro, Adriano Del Sal, Arturo Tallini, Frédéric Zigante, Oscar Ghiglia, Carlo Marchione, Pavel Steidl.

La sua intensa attività concertistica lo ha portato ad esibirsi come solista in prestigiose sale da concerto (Liszt

Academy di Budapest, Grand Theatre a Shanghai, Academy ofMusic di Cracovia, The Sheen Theatre a New York) in tutto il mondo (Europa, Usa, Messico, Cina, Russia) con grande successo di pubblico e critica, collaborando con orchestre quali AuksoKameralna (Polonia), Anima musicae (Ungheria), San Pietroburgo Capella State Orchestra (Russia), Orchestra del Conservatorio Santa Cecilia, Orchestra Internazionale di Roma.

Ha vinto 40 premi in prestigiosi concorsi internazionali. Tra i più importanti: “Guitar masters” Wroclaw, Iserlohn international competition, Certamen “Julian Arcas” di Almerìa, Forum gitarreVienna, Concorso internazionale di Gargnano, Guitar Foundation of America, Concorso internazionale “Pittaluga” di Alessandria.Come riconoscimento dei suoi meriti artistici, ha ricevuto 3 premi “chitarra d’oro” nell’ambito del Convegno Internazionale della Chitarra (Alessandria 2013, Alessandria 2016, Milano 2019) e una targa dal Senato della Repubblica Italiana.

E’ molto richiesto come docente nell’ambito di prestigiosi festival musicali (Maastricht Conservatorium, California State University, Copenhagen Royal Academy of Music, Forum Gitarre Wien,Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart, TU University Dublin, Koblenz guitar Festival, ItalianGuitar Campus); inoltre è spesso invitato a tenere masterclasses e seminari nei Conservatori italiani (Bologna, Mantova, Bari, Campobasso, Adria, Roma, Perugia, Benevento, Fermo, Reggio Calabria).

Dal 2013 svolge attività didattica presso i Conservatori italiani (Potenza, Bologna, Vibo Valentia).

Molto intenso è il suo impegno discografico, accolto da numeroseriviste internazionali con entusiastiche recensioni (Soundboard, Amadeus, Gendai Guitar, Suonare News, Fronimo, Melomano); inoltre 3 suoi album hanno ricevuto il premio “chitarra d’oro per il miglior cd” al prestigioso Convegno internazionale della chitarra(Alessandria 2016 e Milano 2019).

Nel 2019 Naxos Records pubblica il suo doppio album “Alexandre Tansman complete works for guitar”, che include la prima registrazione mondiale di alcuni brani inediti delcompositore polacco nonché una revisione degli altri brani a seguito del confronto con i manoscritti originali.

“De Vitis restituisce attentamente l’idea originale del compositore, anche nei movimenti considerati da Segovia non idiomatici. Il risultato è sublime. Il suo rispetto per il testo musicale fluisce nell’interpretazione” (American Record Guide), “emozionante” (Amadeus), “un disco epocale” (SeiCorde), “raffinata espressività” (Melomano, Spagna), “importanterisultato per la chitarra classica” (Gendai Guitar, Giappone).

Altri 2 album sono pubblicati dall’etichetta italiana DotGuitar:Colloquio with Andrés Segovia (2015), con musiche di MarioCastelnuovo-Tedesco, Andrés Segovia, Angelo Gilardino; Ponceand Villa-Lobos (2020), in cui viene proposta la Suite PopulaireBrésilienne nella sua versione del 1928.

Nel 2022 è prevista la pubblicazione, di nuovo per Naxos, di un album interamente dedicato al compositore fiorentino Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

Appassionato promotore della nuova musica per chitarra, De Vitisha eseguito prime esecuzioni di brani a lui dedicati, come“Sonatine en souvenir de Marcel Proust” e “Into the rose-garden – in memory of Julian Bream” del noto compositore Angelo Gilardino. Inoltre compositori quali N. Jappelli, M. De Biasi, M. Ramelli ed altri gli hanno dedicato delle composizioni per chitarra sola.

De Vitis è molto attivo anche nel campo della trascrizione perchitarra: ha pubblicato le sue versioni di numerosi brani, qualiCiaccona dalla Partita BWV 1004 e Sonata BWV 1005 di JohannSebastian Bach, Valses Poeticos di Enrique Granados.

Luiz Mantovani

A winner of the Pro Musicis International Award (New York, 2001), Luiz Mantovani has appeared in some of the most important concert venues of his native Brazil and abroad. His performance of Walton’s Five Bagatelles in Weill Hall/Carnegie Hall was described by The New York Times as “powerful, beautifully shaped and just practically flawless”. An active chamber musician, since 2004 Luiz is a member of the Brazilian Guitar Quartet, with which he recorded three CDs, including the 2011 Latin Grammy winner “BGQ plays Villa-Lobos”. In 2016, he founded the NOVA Guitar Duo with his wife Nelly von Alven, with which he recently released the CD “Sortilegios” for the Italian label Stradivarius. At ease both in the performance and research fields, in 2019 he earned a PhD from the Royal College of Music in London by investigating the chamber sonatas of Austrian composer Ferdinand Rebay. The first guitarist to receive an Artist Diploma from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Luiz Mantovani also holds a Master’s degree from NEC and a Bachelor’s degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. His guitar teachers were David Leisner, Nicolas Barros and Antônio Guedes. Since 2003, he teaches guitar and chamber music at the State University of Santa Catarina, in Florianopolis, Brazil.

COS’E’:

Due giorni dedicati alla didattica per chitarra con la partecipazione di Maestri provenienti da importanti centri di formazione europei: Giampaolo Bandini, Matteo Mela, Lorenzo Micheli e Paolo Pegoraro.

A CHI E’ RIVOLTO:

L’incontro vuole coinvolgere docenti che lavorano alla preparazione di giovani chitarristi (studenti dei corsi inferiori – medi, intenzionati ad entrare in Conservatorio per il triennio, o già inseriti nel percorso accademico).

FILOSOFIA DELL’INCONTRO :

Il weekend  è pensato come un momento di scambio e interazione tra vari professionisti che lavorano per lo sviluppo e la diffusione del nostro strumento. Vogliamo creare nei due giorni un momento di aggregazione e dibattito in cui esplorare nuove idee e possibilità.

COME SI SVOLGE:

– Lezioni interattive – i maestri invitati affronteranno una lezione con studenti di livello medio-avanzato, interagendo e coinvolgendo i docenti iscritti. I partecipanti saranno divisi in piccoli gruppi in modo da favorire la discussione. A seguito delle lezioni saranno previsti momenti informali dove i diversi gruppi condivideranno le riflessioni nate.

– Workshop – si esamineranno diversi temi legati al benessere psico-fisico del chitarrista, per fornire ai docenti strumenti utili ad una maggiore conoscenza della postura e dell’utilizzo corretto del corpo.

– Tavole rotonde– Momenti di  confronto e discussione di temi legati alla didattica. A conclusione ci sarà uno spazio in cui ascoltare proposte e pensare assieme  possibili sviluppi di questa iniziativa.

– Presentazione di materiali didattici – introduzione di nuovi materiali didattici da utilizzare e proporre ai ragazzi nella fase di studio e approfondimento della conoscenza dello strumento.

Bio:

Paul Galbraith è internazionalmente riconosciuto come uno dei chitarristi più importanti del nostro tempo. Il suo approccio rivoluzionario alla chitarra, sua alleata nella profonda ricerca  interpretativa, lo hanno reso una figura immediatamente riconoscibile nel mondo della musica classica. Paul suona una particolare chitarra a 8 corde che ha sviluppato nel 1993 insieme al leggendario liutaio inglese David Rubio. Progettata da Rubio dalla normale forma della chitarra moderna, mediante un radicale sistema asimmetrico di incordatura “Orpharion”, ne è uscito uno strumento di rinascita della famiglia dei liuti. È stata chiamata la “Brahms Guitar”, grazie alla sua ricchezza nella gamma sonora e il largo spettro della tessitura. Su questo strumento, Paul ha registrato una serie di album di grande successo, a cominciare con la musica di Brahms (l’op. 21/a, variazioni per pianoforte), continuando con le Sonate di Haydn, “Impressioni francesi” con musiche di Debussy e Ravel, un DVD recital (con il famoso Nocturnal di Britten) e le opere complete di Bach per violino solo (Sonate e Partite), che è stato nominato per un Grammy Award nel 1998. Alla domanda di un membro della stampa rivolta ad Andres Segovia dopo il concorso di Leeds nel 1981,  il grande Maestro andaluso esclamò: 

“Paul è magnifico! Sarà un grande artista!!!”.

Bio:

Fabio Zanon is one of the pre-eminent guitarists of today. As a solo and chamber player, author, conductor, teacher and broadcaster, he has sought to expand the perception of the guitar in the concert scene. His recording of Francis Hime’s Guitar Concerto, recorded live with the São Paulo Symphony conducted by Alondra de la Parra, was nominated for the 2011 Latin Grammy as Best Classical Recording. He has recently recorded Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with the same orchestra. His CD containing the complete guitar works by Villa-Lobos was awarded the Bravo Prize in Brazil as ‘Best Classical CD of 2010’; on that occasion he was also shortlisted as Artist of the Year. Born in Brazil in 1966, he started his musical studies in early age with his father, and completed his education at the São Paulo University and at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he also studied conducting. His main teachers were Antonio Guedes, Henrique Pinto, Edelton Gloeden and Michael Lewin, and he also attended the Julian Bream master classes in London. He holds a Master of Music degree from the University of London. Although not greatly drawn to competitions, his career had a significant impulse after he won the first prize at both major international competitions, the GFA – Guitar Foundation of America Competition in St Louis and Tarrega Competition in Spain, within weeks of each other in 1996. Since then, Fabio Zanon has performed in some of the most prestigious halls of Europe, Asia, North and South America, including Royal Festival Hall and Wigmore Hall in London, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Les Invalides in Paris, Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, Philharmonie in St Petersburg, KKL in Lucerne, Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro, Amazonas Theatre in Manaus and Sala Verdi in Milan, to name but a few. An inspiring teacher, he has given master classes at most of the major conservatoires from Los Angeles to Singapore. In 2008 he was appointed a Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He has performed more than 40 different works for guitar and orchestra as a soloist of prestigious groups such as the London Philharmonic, BBC Ulster Orchestra, Israel Chamber Orchestra and all the major orchestras of South America. His chamber music repertoire and partners range from the most traditional to the most adventurous. He has played with partners ranging from celebrated soprano Carole Farley to pop singer Ney Mattogrosso. In 2009 he released Yanomami, a CD for choir and guitar with Coro Cervantes, and in 2011 his third CD with flautist Marcelo Barboza, Mountain Songs. In 2009 he also published his first book, Villa-Lobos, to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of the great Brazilian composer. He has received many awards for his concerts and recordings, the most unexpected being the award as best concert performance of 2006 in Brazil for his debut as an operatic conductor in Michael Nyman’s The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat. Fabio Zanon has had an intense activity as a broadcaster, having conceived, written and narrated, for Radio Cultura FM in São Paulo, series such as The Art of the Guitar (also broadcast by Antena 1 in Portugal), The Spanish Guitar, Simple and Complex and The Brazilian Guitar. This last one has been hailed as a landmark in musical historiography in Brazil and has been adopted as teaching material at music schools. In 2013 Fabio Zanon was appointed Artistic and Educational Manager at the Campos do Jordão International Winter Festival, the largest and most traditional classical music festival in South America.

Title: David ‘Jose’ Rubio (1934–2000): A Personal Insight into Britain’s Most Illustrious Musical Instrument Maker

Bio:

James Westbrook is a British-based organologist whose particular interest is in guitar construction. Currently he holds a Wolfson College, Cambridge, Research Fellowship; investigating ‘The Life and Work of David Rubio’. He is the author of two popular books: Guitars through the Ages (2002) and The Century that Shaped the Guitar (2006) as well as co-author of The Complete Illustrated book of the Acoustic Guitar (2012). In 2010 James was awarded the O’May studentship for his Doctoral research into Guitar Making in Nineteenth-Century London at the University of Cambridge.

James has given papers for The Classical Guitar Festival of Great Britain, European Guitar Teachers Association, The Galpin Society, The American Musical Instrument Society, and the San Francisco Conservatory. He has given numerous interviews for guitar magazines, newspapers, radio, and television. He is a consultant for Brompton’s Auctioneers, specialists in Fine Musical Instruments, at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, London and a part-time luthier and restorer.

James is a Trustee, Committee member and Section Secretary of Springboard (Brighton & Hove Performing Arts Festival), a charitable organization for music, dance, speech and drama. With respect to this, in 2009 he was awarded for 25 years voluntary service by The British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance & Speech. The same year he achieved The London Metropolitan University Recognition Award for Academic Excellence.

James is a founder member of The Consortium for Guitar research, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, a member of the European Guitar Teachers Association and the American Musical Instrument Society as well as Secretary ofThe Brighton & Hove Guitar Society.

James has loaned many of his rare historic guitars from his Guitar Museum collection, including a guitar to Colin Firth, via Ealing Studios for the filming of The Importance of Being Earnest, a rare signed photograph of Francisco Tárrega, the nineteenth century composer of the famous ‘Nokia ring tone’, as a back-drop to BBC 1’s ‘QI’ with Stephen Fry, Alan Davis, a Stauffer guitar for the Travelling Guitars exposition, Musee de la Musique, Paris, and the loan of the Tarrega/Leckie manuscripts and a Torres guitar for the Tarrega 100 exhibition, Villa Real Museum, Spain.

Bio:

Hailed a ‘string sensation’ by BBC Music Magazine, British-French guitarist and composer Laura Snowden is acclaimed for her ‘poise and intensity’ (Guardian) and playing of ‘extraordinary depth’ (Strings, Classical Music Magazine). The first guitarist to graduate from the Yehudi Menuhin School, made possible by the Rolling Stones, she was invited by guitarist Julian Bream to premiere his latest commissions at Wigmore Hall in 2015 and 2017. Laura’s international appearances have since built rapidly, with festival debuts across Europe, China and the US, as well as concerto debuts with Norrköping Symphony Orchestra and Münchener Kammerorchester, and a recording of Lisa Streich’s guitar concerto Augenlider with the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester.

Described by Classical Guitar Magazine as ‘linking guitar’s past, present and future’, Laura’s eclectic musical output has ranged from producing arrangements for Noah and the Whale frontman Charlie Fink to giving dozens of world premieres by composers including Julian Anderson, Errollyn Wallen and Olli Mustonen. She has also collaborated closely with her folk band Tir Eolas, appearing with them at Shakespeare’s Globe at the invitation of guitarist John Williams. As a composer, Laura’s music has been performed at Royal Albert Hall, Wigmore Hall and Sadlers Wells, commissioned by the Park Lane Group, Birmingham Symphony Hall and International Guitar Foundation, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio Scotland and Hong Kong Radio 4.

Laura currently teaches at the Yehudi Menuhin School and has given classes alongside performances at venues including the Royal College of Music, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Birmingham Conservatoire, Brussels Conservatoire, Uppsala International Guitar Festival, Altamira Hong Kong International Guitar Symposium, the Volterra Project in Italy and the Guitar and Lute Festival in Sweden.

Laura’s principal teachers have been Julian Bream, Richard Wright (Royal College of Music and Yehudi Menuhin School) and Gary Ryan (Royal College of Music). Her guitar was made by Christopher Dean.

Gary Southwell talks about making guitars for Julian Bream. Recalling the 15 years they spent collaborating closely on the study and reconstruction of the guitars of Herman Hauser 1.

Bio:

Gary Southwell is regarded today as one of the most established of the British builders. He trained in the early 1980s, primarily in furniture making and in historical (pre-Torres) instruments, and in 1983 set up his own workshop in Nottingham specializing in and becoming a leading expert in 19th century guitars. Additionally, since 1995 Gary has been building Hauser-style guitars for Julian Bream and to quote Gary directly: “I have worked closely with Julian Bream on this Hauser design since 1995, experimenting and refining certain aspects. We have been particularly interested in the tuning of the front, back and body chamber; examining their relationship to each other and how that affects the tonal quality of the finished guitar. This has enabled me to successfully produce a sound reminscent of the original Hauser guitar.” This guitar we have on offer is such a “bench copy” of that 1940 Hauser immortalized by Bream in several recording and documentaries. The guitar is surprisingly lightweight and has an impressive bottom end, perfect balance and a Hauser-like clarity that indeed shows close attention to the original. Craftsmanship is superb, materials are first-rate. Not a single detail has been overlooked – it is fitted with Rodgers tuners and thinly finished in an amber oil varnish which due to its strength has left this instrument, now nearly 20 years old in near-pristine condition.

In addition to Julian Bream, Gary’s impressive list of clients includes the likes of Paul Simon, David Starobin, Sting, David Tanenbaum, Scott Tennant and John Williams, to name just a few.

The lecture will focus on the new discoveries about the genesis of Fantasia (1957) and on a new arrangement of For whom the bell toll. It will be discussed how Gerhard’s own political view is embedded in his music.

Marco Ramelli

Born in Milan (Italy), Marco is a guitarist, composer and artistic director from Milano lecturer at TU Dublin conservatory of Music . 

He has been invited to perform worldwide at major concert halls, his concertistic career also includes performances at several international music festivals, including the “Festival Paganini” in Parma, the “Edinburgh Fringe Festival”, “Stagione Internazionale della Chitarra di Lodi”, the “Big Guitar Weekend” in Glasgow, “Aberdeen International Festival”, the “Guitar Master” in Brighton, “Concerti al Castello Sforzesco” in Milano, “Festival Internazionale di Lagonegro” and National Concert Hall international guitar serie in Dublin.

During his career he has been awarded various first Prizes in important international competitions in Italy, Spain, UK, France and Serbia. 

As a composer, Marco won the prestigious “World Guitar Composition Competition” and his music is performed by internationally acclaimed soloist including Lorenzo Micheli, Sean Shibe, Andrea Dieci and Andrea De Vitis.

Marco has given lecture-recitals at different institutions and festivals, including Hong Kong guitar Symposium, Royal Conservatory of Scotland, DIT conservatory, RNCM Manchester, Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali “Rinaldo Franci” and Instituto “Luigi Boccherini” Lucca.

His debut album “Energico” was released by Nimbus Alliance in 2013 with music by Paganini, Llobet, Boyle and Takemitsu. Classical Guitar Magazine wrote about the recording: “A major step towards international recognition from a young guitarists with much to offer”. In 2018 he released an album with Brilliant Classics with the complete solo music by Federico Mompou and Roberto Gerhard. He has also made recordings for Naxos, Dynamic records and Radio of Las Palmas.

But his dedication to music is not only confined to his performances: Marco is also Artistic Director of some music festivals in Italy and Ireland – for instance the increasingly important Festival Corde d’Autunno in Milan and TouchTheSound Project -as well as a very enthusiastic guitar teacher. From 2004 to 2018 he inspired the creation of more that one hundred events.

Marco obtained a doctorate in performing arts from the University of St Andrews (UK) with a  porfolio entitled ‘The Composer and the Performer: An Intertwined Relationship’, includes studio performances, a portfolio of compositions, and several editions of existing music, together with a development project exploring the collaborative process with a luthier.

Marco has graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a Masters Degree of Performance (APEL) with Distinction under the supervision of Prof. Allan Neave and Prof. Rory Boyle in composition.

Marco began studying guitar with Prof. Andrea Dieci. In just seven years he graduated as a private candidate from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatoire of Music in Milan and obtained a second level postgraduate diploma (with full marks and magna com laude) at the Luca Marenzio Conservatoire of Music in Darfo Boario Terme (Italy). Marco obtained a further postgraduate diploma in “Chamber Music” with full marks; all in addition to a bachelor’s degree in Computer science. He has participated in masterclasses throughout Europe with world-renowned guitarists such as Pavel Steidl, Oscar Ghiglia and the Japanese harpist Naoko Yoshino

A unique exhibition of the most representative instrument of  David ‘Jose’ Rubio: Britain’s Most Illustrious Musical Instrument-maker.

The English luthier David Rubio embodies the link between flamenco art and Julian Bream. He devoted himself to lutherie in the first ‘60s after a long experience as a flamenco guitarist that earned him the nickname “Rubio” which he then chose as his last name. He was inspired for this choice by the historical Madrid workshop of Faustino Condé where Rubio used to perform his daily playing practice, and which belonged to the most renowned Domingo Esteso.

Travelling to the US for his activity as a guitarist, he settled in New York where he started his new career as a guitar maker with a copy of the Esteso flamenco guitar he used to play.

A meeting with Julian Bream was decisive for his future: Bream actually asked him to make instruments following the style of Robert Bouchet, whose guitars the virtuoso loved. However, the real building reference point for David Rubio was Francisco Simplicio whose lutherie inspired his best instruments, which Bream played for years. The maestro indeed recorded the Nocturnal by Benjamin Britten with a 1965 Rubio, in a performance that became the symbol of the evolution of the guitar language.

At the end of the ‘60s Rubio went back to his native England where he also devoted himself to the production of ancient instruments (luthe, bass viol, baroque violin, harpsichord), and in the last part of his life the string quartet. In Cambridge, where he last established his workshop, he collaborated with the university to test particular treatments in order to reproduce the sound of ancient instruments, especially the violin.

The aim of this festival is to deal personally with the last period of the author’s activity. His collaboration with the Italian guitarist Stefano Grondona and the Scottish guitarist Paul Galbraith – welcome guests in this edition – nurtured anew Rubio’s interest in the production of guitars and seemingly defined a second era for the luthier, just as it happened to Antonio De Torres.

Bio:

Paco Peña embodies both authenticity and innovation in flamenco. As guitarist, composer, dramatist, producer and artistic mentor he has transformed perceptions of this archetypal Spanish art form.  

Born in the Andalucian city of Córdoba, Paco Peña began learning guitar from his brother at the age of six and made his first professional appearance at the age of 12. In the late 1960s he left Spain for London, where his recitals of flamenco music captured the public imagination.

In 1995 The New York Times declared that: “MrPeña is a virtuoso, capable of dazzling an audience beyond the frets of mortal man. He combines rapid-fire flourishes with a colourist’s sense of shading; this listener cannot recall hearing any guitarist with a more assured mastery of his instrument.” It should come as no surprise that readers of America’s Guitar magazine judged Paco Peña as best flamenco guitarist of the year for five consecutive years.

Since 1970 Paco Peña has performed regularly with his own hand-picked company of dancers, guitarists and singers in a succession of groundbreaking shows. The Paco Peña Flamenco Dance Company has taken flamenco into the realm of music-theatre, with regular seasons in London (Royal Festival Hall, Sadler’s Wells Theatre and Barbican) and festival appearances in Edinburgh, Adelaide, Amsterdam, Athens, Istanbul, Singapore and Hong Kong etc.

In 1997 Paco Peña was proud to be named Oficialde la Cruz de la Orden del Mérito Civil, and in May of 2012, he was thrilled to be awarded the Gold Medal in the Arts by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington – these honourswere both bestowed by King Juan Carlos of Spain.

This exhibition, of a highly historic and cultural impact, witnesses the unique expressive tension of the Madrid community, where the 20th century saw the merge of its social context and popular expression with the new and relevant building project conceived by Torres, with a more academic dimension, adding value to the instrument that most deeply embodies all these aspects. He produced a new instrument based on the true definition of “artwork”, when the human gesture, by means of a skillful technique, gathers and expresses a broad cultural dimension thus originating an art movement (such as in the case of Cubism and Expressionism in painting) where the educated and popular trends coexist.

The history of lutherie in Madrid in the 20th century originates from the disagreement of thought between the two Ramìrez brothers, which resulted in the creation of two different reference schools. The first and more traditionalist branch with José Ramìrez I continued the tradition belonging to Francisco Gonzàles, the most representative luthier of mid 19th century, who is considered as the link between the important Madrid tradition of the first 19th century and the increase in proportions which occurred in the second part of that century, reaching to the present time through four generations. In his workshop, in addition to his son José Ramirez II, Enrique Garcia and Julian Gómez Ramírez (just a namesake) were trained. Subsequently the latter settled in France where he imported a tradition that set the basis for the development of the modern guitar lutherie there. The second branch was more interested in the innovations brought about by Antonio De Torres, and remained active under the name of Manuel Ramìrez until his death (1916): Enrique Garcia followed this path and brought these innovations to Barcelona where he settled, becoming the forefather of the Catalan lutherie school. This school continued in the individual workshops of those masters who embody the greatest lutherie of the last century in Madrid to which this exhibition is devoted: Santos Hernández, Domingo Esteso, Modesto Borreguero and later on Marcelo Barbero and Arcangel Fernandez.

Thanks to the comprehension and implementation of the new and illuminated concepts of the Torres project, Manuel’s workshop produced the instrument Segovia played in his first twenty-five years of career. Only after Manuel’s death the real authorship of the instrument was revealed and attributed to Santos Hernàndez who at the time was the headmaster of the oficiales in the workshop.

In 1922 Santos made a guitar for the renowned flamenco guitarist Ramon Montoya, therefore defining a personal model for a flamenco concert guitar, the “flamenca negra”.

Santos Hernàndez is therefore nowadays considered a reference for the lutherie school of the 20th century in Madrid as he has been able to show the Madrid expressive spirit, developing two different projects: the classical and the flamenco models.

uno dei virtuosi più raffinati e versatili del suo strumento

Il chitarrista Pablo Márquez è considerato oggi come uno dei virtuosi più versatili del suo strumento. Oltre alle sue capacità di interprete di nuova musica, che applica regolarmente con rinomati ensemble quali l’Ensemble Intercontemporain, è molto apprezzato anche come interprete sia del repertorio chitarristico storico che della musica tradizionale di Salta, il suo luogo d’origine nell’Argentina nordoccidentale.

Pablo Márquez ha iniziato la formazione musicale all’età di 10 anni, eseguendo tre anni più tardi il suo primo concerto con l’orchestra di Salta. Prima di trasferirsi in Europa per approfondire la musica antica con Javier Hinojosa e la direzione con Eric Sobzyck, Rodolfo Fischer e Peter Eötvös, ha studiato con Jorge Martinez Zaráte e Eduardo Fernández. È attivo come artista free-lance e tiene concerti a livello internazionale, dopo aver vinto in gioventù il primo premio a diversi concorsi: il concorso internazionale di Radio France, il concorso di chitarra Villa-Lobos in Brasile e i concorsi di Ginevra e Monaco di Baviera.

Nella sua attività concertistica internazionale, ha incontrato diverse importanti personalità musicali. La sua carriera artistica è stata profondamente influenzata dal pianista ungherese György Sebök, con cui si è perfezionato, e dall’incontro con Dino Saluzzi cui Márquez si era rivolto per riscoprire le proprie radici nella musica argentina.

Andrea De Vitis è un interprete che conquista pubblico e giuria per la nitidezza ad alta definizione del suo modo di suonare, per il formidabile controllo della dinamica e dell’agogica e per la chiarezza con cui afferma il proprio pensiero, traducendo nel contempo quello dell’Autore (Il Fronimo, 2016)

Andrea De Vitis (Roma, 1985) è considerato  uno dei chitarristi più interessanti della sua generazione. 

Negli ultimi anni ha vinto più di 40 premi in prestigiosi concorsi internazionali. Tra i primi premi si citano: Guitar Masters 2016 di Wroclaw, Certamen Internacional “Julian Arcas” di Almerìa, Forum Gitarre Vienna, Budapest International Competition, Iserlohn guitar competition, Concorso Internazionale di Gargnano, Kutna Hora Guitar Competition, Concorso Mercatali di Gorizia, Concorso Internazionale Città di Mottola, Concorso Internazionale Claxica. Ottiene altresì il II premio al Concorso “Frauchi” di Mosca e “M. Pittaluga” di Alessandria (primo premio non assegnato) e al Guitar Foundation of America (Denver).

Per i suoi meriti artistici ha ricevuto due “Chitarre d’oro ” nell’ambito del Convegno Internazionale “Pittaluga” di Alessandria: nel 2013 per “la giovane promessa”e nel 2016 per il “miglior cd”.

Piera Dadomo e Vincenzo Torricella si sono formati alla scuola chitarristica di Angelo Gilardino. La loro grande amicizia dura da trent’anni e li ha portati presto a voler suonare insieme, affrontando pagine del repertorio originale per due chitarre e anche trascrizioni; in collaborazione con registi e autori teatrali hanno inoltre ideato spettacoli monografici. 

Hanno avuto l’onore di essere dedicatari di opere solistiche e da camera di alcuni importanti compositori italiani: in particolare per il duo, Angelo Gilardino ha scritto il concerto dal titolo Liederkonzert, per due chitarre, percussioni, celesta e orchestra da camera, e la composizione Madrigale e ballo di Pian dei giullari, per due chitarre. 

Come solisti e in formazioni da camera hanno inciso per Map, Dynamic e per la rivista italiana Seicorde. Svolgono con passione un’intensa attività didattica. 

Dal 1998 al 2004 hanno collaborato alle Vacanze Chitarristiche di Trivero (Bi), dirette dal Maestro Gilardino, in qualità di docenti del corso formativo.  

Dal 2012 organizzano nel mese di luglio il Festival Chitarristico Le anime della chitarra, nello splendido borgo medievale di Castell’Arquato (Pc); in collaborazione con la Scuola H. Strickler di Rovato (BS) organizzano da settembre ad aprile il ciclo di incontri “Guitaromanie”.

Come solista ha tenuto concerti in Iran, Italia, Spagna e in tutto il Regno Unito, esibendosi in recital in locali come Kings Place (Londra), Sage Gateshead (Newcastle), City Halls (Glasgow), Stevenson Hall (Glasgow) e il Leeds College of Music oltre a esibizioni in festival come il London Guitar Festival, il St Magnus International Festival, il Big Guitar Weekend, il Garrigues Memorial Emili Pujol, il Bath Guitar Festival, il Shrewsbury Guitar Festival, il Plug New Music Festival e l’Ullapool Guitar Festival.

Ha suonato come solista con orchestre come la Royal Scottish National Orchestra e l’European Union Youth Orchestra. Ha anche eseguito e rilasciato interviste per il programma Classics Unwrapped di BBC Radio Scotland.

Appassionato musicista da camera, Sasha ha lavorato con numerosi musicisti e ensemble, tra cui collaborazioni con il Red Note Ensemble, il chitarrista Ian Watt, il flautista Lee Holland e il soprano Alison McNeill con cui sono stati i destinatari 2015-2017 della prestigiosa “Enterprise Music Scotland Residency”.

Francisco Simplicio luthier. Note di viaggio sulle tracce dei liutai Francisco e Miguel Simplicio nella Barcellona fra modernismo e seconda Repubblica

 

Diego Milanese è nato a Torino nel 1957 dove ha iniziato lo studio della chitarra all’età di 11 anni. Dopo qualche anno di esperienze nel rock progressivo ha iniziato lo studio della chitarra classica con Alessandro Viesti e composizione con Felice Quaranta. Dal 1981 al 1984, con quattro borse di studio consecutive, ha frequentato i corsi di perfezionamento dell’Accademia Chigiana di Siena con Oscar Ghiglia e quelli di intavolature antiche con Ruggero Chiesa, dove ha ottenuto il Diploma di Merito. Si è diplomato presso il Conservatorio “G. Verdi” di Milano. Ha inoltre partecipato a varie masterclasses con Ruggero Chiesa, Godelieve Monden e Hopkinson Smith. Nel 1985 è stato cofondatore dell’Insieme Cameristico di Torino, ensemble con il quale si esibisce regolarmente in varie formazioni cameristiche.

Dal 1990 si interessa all’esecuzione su strumenti originali del XIX secolo. Il suo CD solistico “Tre Sonate viennesi per chitarra” con musiche di Giuliani, Diabelli e Matiegka (prima registrazione mondiale della Sonata op. 23) per la Phoenix Classics è stato distribuito in allegato alla rivista musicologica “Il Fronimo” nell’anno 1999.

Ha preso parte a concerti e registrazioni discografiche di musiche di vari autori del ’900, alcune in prima esecuzione in Italia, fra i quali Margola, Santórsola, Bozza, Assad, Bertotto, Reich, Bettinelli.

Dal 1998 inizia il suo interesse nei confronti della liuteria storica catalana. Nel 2001, in collaborazione con Umberto Piazza, ha pubblicato sulla rivista “Il Fronimo” un esteso studio biografico sui liutai catalani Enrique García, Francisco e Miguel Simplicio, studio che nel 2010 è approdato al libro ‘Francisco Simplicio, luthier’, pubblicato dalle edizioni “Il Dialogo” e che ha riscosso grande interesse in ambito internazionale.

Nato a Rakovnik (Repubblica Ceca), ancora studente all’Accademia di Musica di Praga, ha vinto nel 1982 il Concorso Internazionale di “Radio France” a Parigi nel 1982. Da allora è diventato uno dei solisti più acclamati della sua generazione.

La situazione politica dell’allora Cecoslovacchia lo obbligò, nel 1988, a chiedere asilo politico in Olanda, dove ottenne la cittadinanza. Suona regolarmente nelle più prestigiose sale da concerto del mondo: Londra, Tokio, Vienna, Sydney, Toronto, Amsterdam, Buenos Ayres, Roma, e nei più importanti Festivals.

Le sue interpretazioni della musica dell’800, su strumenti originali, aggiungono una sensazione di meraviglia ed autenticità alle sue già straordinarie esecuzioni. 

Secondo la rivista italiana “Guitart”, Pavel Steidl appare tra gli otto più importanti chitarristi del 2003; nel 2005 è stato insignito del Classical Guitart Award.  La sua discografia ha ricevuto grandi apprezzamenti dalla critica internazionale.

L’incontro artistico, appassionato, tra due poeti provenienti da lingue, storie, vivenze apparentemente contrapposte. Lo spagnolo Jorge Guillén e Eugenio Montale. Due poeti allo specchio, o uno specchio poetico con due artefici sopraffini, ciascuno dei quali intento a interpretare l’altro, in una cornice di eccezione: l’editore Vanni Scheiwiller, immaginifico tessitore di legami (apparentemente) impossibili.

L’ensemble Corde D’Autunno è gruppo cameristico di dieci chitarre nato dal desiderio di collaborazione creativa tra amici e musicisti di altissimo livello provenienti da numerose regioni italiane. L’aspirazione e l’obiettivo fondamentale dell’Ensemble si collocano e sono definiti nel desiderio di diffondere il piacere e la bellezza del suonare musica da camera, come pure nella volontà di condividere con il pubblico un repertorio vario, che valorizzi le straordinarie possibilità timbriche ed espressive della chitarra.

Dall’esigenza di promuovere le peculiarità dello strumento sono nate le trascrizioni, realizzate dal Direttore Paolo De Lorenzi, di un repertorio nato originariamente per orchestra che viene ripensato per esaltare la sensibilità delle seicorde, ricca di colori brillanti e delicate nuances…

Il Programma presentato, che sarà nucleo del primo progetto discografico dell’ensemble, è incentrato sulle musiche francesi del periodo romantico e del primo Novecento con le pagine di Chabrier, Ravel e Debussy, del quale nel 2018 si festeggia il centenario della morte.

Aliosha De Santis

Aliosha De Santis nato a Tivoli 11/11/1984 inizia gli studi della chitarra con suo nonnoVinicio De Santis . Successivamente studia per diversi anni con il maestro Giulio Disposti e subito dopo con il Maestro Flavio Ciatto . Frequenta il conservatorio di Roma Santa Cecilia e di Viterbo . Presente in diversi corsi di perfezionamento con David Russell , Marco Socias , Flavio Ciatto e direttori di orchestra come Fabrizio Bastianini. Vincitore nel 2012 del concorso intestazione J.S.Bach. In Germania . 2 premio nel 2013 al concorso internazionale Mario Gangi in Cassino finalista del concorso internazionale J.S.Bach a Tokyo e concorso internazionale Alirio Diaz in Roma . Svolge numerosi concerti ogni anno in molti paesi tra cui Spagna , Italia , Germania , Repubblica Ceca . Nel 2014 è stato invitato dalla fondazione Andres Segovia a tenere un concerto nel museo Segovia in Linares (Spagna). È docente al Festival internazionale di chitarra in Reisbach (Germania) organizzato dalla famiglia Hauser . Aliosha suona una chitarra fatta da Kathrin Hauser nel 2014 .

Andrea Dieci è stato allievo di Paolo Cherici al Conservatorio “Verdi” di Milano e di Oscar Ghiglia all’Accademia Musicale Chigiana di Siena e alla Musik-Akademie di Basilea. Ha vinto il 1° Premio ai Concorsi Internazionali di Gargnano, Lagonegro e “De Bonis” di Cosenza e il Premio Speciale della Giuria all’Internationaler Musik-Wettbewerb dell’ARD di Monaco di Baviera. Si è esibito in Europa, negli Stati Uniti, in America Centrale e del Sud, Asia e Africa, registrando per RAI, Radio Vaticana, Radio Nacional Española, BBC, Radio Televisione Svizzera Italiana ed Euroradio. Ha inciso 12 CD per varie etichette discografiche, tra cui figurano monografie su Ponce, Jappelli, Piazzolla e Sor. È l’unico chitarrista ad aver registrato le opere solistiche complete di Villa-Lobos, Takemitsu e Henze. Gli è stata assegnata due volte (2005 e 2017) la “Chitarra d’oro” per il miglior CD chitarristico dell’anno al Convegno Internazionale di Chitarra di Alessandria. Ha tenuto masterclass e seminari per rinomate istituzioni musicali in vari Paesi d’Europa, negli USA, in Messico, Brasile, Singapore e Giappone. È titolare della cattedra di chitarra all’Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali “Vecchi-Tonelli” di Modena.

The exhibition of original historical guitars displays instruments made by Hauser in two different periods: the guitars of the first period, before the Spanish contamination, and the guitars of the later period, after the meeting with Miguel Llobet and Andres Segovia.
The guitars of the first period were strongly inspired by the most famous XIX century model for ex. Stauffer and Guadagnini, whereas the guitars of the latter  were influenced by the deep observation of Llobet’s A. De Torres (1859) and Segovia’s Manuel Ramirez/Santos Hernandez (1912).
After the discovery of this new approach to the making of instruments, his project concept moved progressively to the new Spanish guitar model.
Hauser began to make instruments in an era of dramatic and fast changes for the guitar: famous guitar players started to be included in the programme of great theatres and as a soloist with orchestra and they required a new instrument, louder and with more details.
We can infer that Hauser’s guitar project focused on saving the original Spanish concept and, at the same time, on bringing it into the modern era with the help of Segovia’s suggestion.
This concept is perfectly summarised by this quote from Segovia about Hauser guitars: “the perfect instrument that saves the Spanish sound”.
