RESIDENZE ERRANTI is an initiative to support projects created by young artists under 35 as soloists or collaborating with other artists. The residencies offer six participation scholarships that provide free access to six intensive weekends of masterclasses, workshops, roundtables and individual supervision, as well as free admission to all concerts organized by the Festival Corde d’Autunno and the guitar concerts organized by Barco Teatro.

The educational approach of the residencies views participants as artists rather than students, placing great emphasis on creating a community of artists who can discuss and grow through peer-to-peer learning. Established artists who have distinguished themselves through innovative projects are invited to each event. By interacting with these more experienced artists, the residency aims to broaden the participants’ vision and perspectives. Each project will also benefit from individual supervision to guide its development.

During the residency, the artists will have several opportunities to perform and record videos to present their work. The selected artists (who will be notified by July 31) must send a professional video of their performance and a short video in which they describe their artistic project. These materials will be uploaded to specific web pages and serve as a portfolio for each resident artist.

Among the various opportunities offered by the Residency, the selected artists will have access to TouchTheSound‘s valuable collection of instruments (https://www.touchthesoundproject.com/) and will be able to use both historical and modern instruments from the collection for recordings related to their artistic project. At the conclusion of the Residency, a jury of prominent figures from the music and cultural world will select one of the participating projects, which will be produced by the two organizing entities of the Residency: the Festival Corde d’Autunno and Barco Teatro.

Residenze Erranti collaborates with TU Dublin Conservatoire, whose researchers will provide workshops focused on developing the skills to write effective research projects.

This year also marks the beginning of a collaboration with The Volterra Project, Summer Guitar Institute (https://www.volterraguitar.org/), one of the most renowned innovative projects in the international classical guitar scene, with which we share a mission and educational goals. In this context, one of the artists from Residenze Erranti will be invited to perform and present their artistic project at The Volterra Project, Summer Guitar Institute.

● Facilitare la crescita e lo sviluppo professionale dei giovani musicisti, mettendoli in contatto

con professionisti del settore

● Sostenere la ricerca e il progresso nel campo della chitarra classica attraverso collaborazioni

con altre organizzazioni e istituzioni musicali anche legati alla ricerca musicale

● Offrire supervisione e sostegno individuale per giovani professionisti della chitarra riguardo a

progetti di ricerca artistica, musicologica o di performance

Requisiti dei progetti per le Residenze

I progetti proposti dai partecipanti dovranno presentare caratteristiche di innovazione, creatività e valore artistico, ed essere rilevanti per il mondo della chitarra.

Quelle che seguono sono idee di progetto, un punto di partenza per i partecipanti per sviluppare le proprie proposte in vista del programma di residenza per artisti.

Progetti che si concentrano sulla valorizzazione del repertorio storico, utilizzando strumenti d’epoca
Progetti che prevedono la creazione di nuova musica, composta dal partecipante o in collaborazione con compositori
Progetti che reinventano l’esperienza del concerto ed esplorano nuovi modi per coinvolgere il pubblico
Progetti che esplorano l’integrazione con la musica di diverse forme d’arte come la danza, il teatro e le arti visive
Progetti che promuovono la diversità di genere e culturale nella musica classica
Progetti che affrontano questioni legate alla disabilità

Cosa offre la residenza

lezioni di tutoraggio individuali volte a fornire supervisione al progetto, ma anche l’insegnamento delle competenze necessarie per raggiungere gli obiettivi musicali. Tra gli artisti della residenza e ospiti: Marco Ramelli, Giacomo Susani, Enrica Savigni, Lorenzo Micheli e Matteo Mela.
masterclass in cui gli artisti residenti potranno interagire con alcuni dei virtuosi più importanti del settore musicale e con artisti di grande esperienza, appositamente invitati e ospitati dalle residenze
workshop con artisti non legati alla specialità della chitarra, per ampliare gli orizzonti dei partecipanti e promuovere l’interazione con altre arti. In particolare, saranno coinvolti personaggi riconosciuti per il loro alto valore professionale e artistico.

Chi è idoneo a presentare domanda?

Le residenze Erranti sono rivolte a musicisti solisti e gruppi che rispondano alle caratteristiche elencate di seguito:

L’età dei partecipanti deve essere pari o inferiore ai 35 anni (per i gruppi si applica ad ogni partecipante)
Il livello artistico richiesto è di tipo professionale
Il progetto presentato deve comprendere idee progettuali singole o multiple di generi/forme d’arte in cui la chitarra classica è lo strumento principale
Il progetto presentato può essere solistico, di musica da camera o di gruppi/ensemble che coinvolgano diverse discipline artistiche

Materiali da allegare al modulo di iscrizione per partecipare alla selezione

Valutazione delle domande

I principali tutor della Residenza Errante valuteranno le candidature idonee in base ai criteri di selezione sopra elencati. I candidati devono tenere presente che esiste un numero limitato di opportunità di residenza disponibili e che soddisfare i criteri di ammissibilità da soli non garantisce la partecipazione.

Candidati prescelti

I tutor incontreranno i candidati prescelti per discutere il loro programma di residenza, incluso il programma generale di lavoro. L’incontro si terrà con una delle seguenti modalità: durante il Festival Homenaje (8-16 settembre 2023 a Barco Teatro, Padova); on-line.

Notifica dei risultati

Residenze Erranti informerà tutti i candidati delle decisioni nel giugno 2023 tramite e-mail.

The Residenze Erranti objectives:

● To support young musicians to develop their potential, encouraging innovation and creativity;

● To stimulate artistic and musical research;

● To promote a community of young guitarists, providing opportunities of collaboration and

exchange of ideas;

● To provide participants with recording and public performance opportunities, helping them

to concretise their projects and build up their professional portfolios;

● To facilitate young musicians’ growth and professional development, allowing them to be

in contact with important figures in their profession;

● To support research and progress in the field of the classical guitar, through

collaborations with musical institutions that are involved in music research;

● To offer individual supervision to young professional guitarists (under 35) concerning

projects of artistic, musicological and performance research.

Project requirements for Residenze Erranti

Proposed projects will be expected to present innovative and creative qualities of artistic value, and to be relevant for the world of the guitar.
Below are suggested ideas for possible projects, a starting point for participants to develop their own proposal to be submitted for participation in the program.

Projects focusing on historical repertoire and which involve the use of historical instruments;
Projects foreseeing the realisation of new music, composed by the participant or in collaboration with external composers;
Projects re-imagining the concert experience, which explore new ways of involving the audience;
Projects exploring the interaction between music and other art forms, such as dance, theater and the visual arts;
Projects promoting diversity of gender and culture in classical music;
Projects involving activities that concern disabilities

What do the Residencies offer?

● Individual lessons aiming at supervising each project and teaching the necessary skills to develop musical objectives. Among the main tutors and guests: Marco Ramelli, Giacomo Susani, Enrica Savigni, Lorenzo Micheli, Matteo Mela e Jonathan Leathwood.

● Masterclasses which give the chance to interact with some of the most important concert artists of the musical field as well as with other artists of broad experience, invited for the residencies;

● Workshops with non-guitarist artists, in order to provide the participants with a wider range of ideas and to promote the interaction between the arts. The invited professionals will be of high caliber, and internationally recognised for their value;

● Opportunities to perform in concert;

● Round table talks where discussion and exchange among colleagues, professionals and

students will be encouraged;

● Technical sessions with sound engineers and stage managers. These meetings will be of

great importance as they will concern several aspects of project managing, such as

audio/video recordings, live productions;

● Audio and visual recordings realised professionally at Barco Teatro and Centro Asteria;

● Realising and uploading a personal webpage dedicated to each project’s portfolio.

NB: Expenses relating to meals/travel/accommodation are the responsibility of the participants.

Residenze Erranti is a project that believes in community and the sharing of experiences. For this reason, selected projects must participate in at least 80% of the activities. Presence is a necessary requirement to access the final selections.

Who can apply?

The Residenze Erranti are available for solo and chamber musicians that meet the following characteristics:

● The participant must be age 35 or younger (for groups this limit is applied to each individual);

● The artistic level required is professional

● The project presented must include focused or multidisciplinary ideas (which can include

other art forms) where the guitar is the core instrument;

● The project presented can be solo, involve chamber music groups or ensembles

including a diverse range of artistic disciplines.

What to include with the application form:

● FILE A: 1. Curriculum Vitae 2. Biography of other collaborators (max 1 A4 page per collaborator);

● FILE B (optional): Link to a short video (max. 3 minutes) describing the proposed project, including the artistic objectives it foresees and how you intend to organize the work

● FILE C: 1. A written description of your project (max 1 A4 page) 2. A short letter of motivations, outlining the reasons why you intend to take part in the residency (max 1 A4 page) 3. A maximum of 3 Links to videos of recent performances (video can be also not connected to the proposed project). In addition, it is advised to submit a hypothetical concert programme of your project.

Proposal evaluation

The main tutors of the Residenze Erranti will assess each proposal according to the criteria outlined above. The available places are limited and candidates are invited to consider that satisfying the application requirements does not necessarily guarantee a place in the program.

Selected candidates

The tutors will meet all selected candidates in order to discuss their residency program as well the general plan for the year. This meeting will take place during the “Homenaje Guitar Festival”, between September 7th and 15th 2024, in Barco Teatro (Padua).

Notification of the results

Residenze Erranti will inform all candidates of the outcome of their application by July 31st 2024.
